O.S.D.S.S. Co-operative Education

1. Introduction

Benefits of Co-op

Co-operative Education (Co-op) students have the opportunity to test-drive a career, build skills, and get hands-on work experience.  Co-op leads to success for all students regardless of whether their post-secondary destination is direct entry to the workplace, apprenticeship, college or university.

Four Parts of the Co-op Program

The Co-operative Education program is made up of four components: pre-course counselling, pre-placement classroom instruction, on-the-job Co-op experience, and classroom integration days (held throughout the semester). Students must complete weekly log sheets and integration assignments in a timely manner in order to be allowed to continue in the Co-op program.  Students who attain at least fifty percent (as detailed below) may be granted one secondary school credit for each set of 110 documented Co-op hours.

Mandatory Consent Forms and WSIB Coverage

The Co-op Consent Form and The Work Education Agreement (WEA) must both be signed by the student, parent/guardian, placement supervisor and teacher before the student begins the Co-op placement.  The WEA specifies the Co-op days/times, Worker Safety Board Insurance (WSIB) coverage, and contact information for all parties.  Each person will receive one copy of the multipart WEA after the form is signed by all parties.

Injury Prevention and Safety Instruction

Co-op placements must provide training, and a safe and supervised learning environment. Co-op placements are approved and monitored by Co-op teachers. Safety instruction/learning materials are provided to students through the Young Workers Awareness Program that includes instruction on the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other curriculum resources.  Co-op students are urged to treat safety seriously since young workers are most at risk. Co-op students are protected by the Occupational Health and Safety Act which includes the right to refuse unsafe work.  Students (and parents) should immediately contact the Co-op teacher regarding any safety concern.

Reporting Injuries

In the  event of an injury:

Report all injuries to your Co-op placement supervisor immediately.

Report all injuries to your Co-op teacher or school administrator within 24 hours.

2.  Assessment and Evaluation

Meeting deadlines is an important workplace reality and a strong Co-op expectation.  Weekly Log Sheets must be completed by the student, signed by the supervisor and handed in to the teacher each school week by Manday at 9:00 am.

Students are responsible not only for their behaviour in the classroom, school, and placement, but also for providing evidence of their achievement of the overall expectations within the time frame specified by the teacher and in a form approved by the teacher.  There will be consequences for not completing assignments for evaluation or for submitting those assignments late.

Weekly Log Sheets are the mainstay of communication and accountability between the Co-op student, the placement supervisor and the Co-op teacher.  Students may be temporarily or permanently removed from their Co-op placement if the weekly reporting and deadline requirement is not met.

Students may need to complete an Alternate Evaluation in the form of an Exam if any of the above (1, 2, or 3) are not completed. The Exam will be written during the examination days in June.

Late and missed assignments for evaluation in Co-op may be reflected in the student’s grade calculation and will also be noted on the report card as part of the evaluation of a student’s development of the learning skills and work habits.

The four learning categories (Knowledge, Inquiry, Communication and Application) are incorporated in the above marking scheme and are weighted at 25% each.

One Co-operative Education credit may be granted for each 110 hours if:

(1)  a mark is earned of at least fifty percent on the above assessment and evaluation.

(2)  detailed and accurate log sheets that have been signed by the Co-op placement supervisor have been handed in by the student each school week to the Co-op teacher.

3.  Attendance Procedures  for  Co-op Students

All Co-op students must follow the O.S.C.V.I.  Attendance policy and procedures with the following additional requirements:

For  each  day  of absence or lateness;

1. Parent/Guardian must phone/contact the Co-op teacher by 9 a.m. (Earlier is better)

2. Student must phone the Co-op supervisor by the Co-op start time. (Earlier is better)

The absence is unauthorized if the above  attendance requirements are not met.

If Co-op hours are missed as a result of detention then students must notify their teacher and placement supervisor and make up the Co-op hours at a later time.  Absences may jeopardize your Co-op placement.

Further Attendance Notes

Attendance is mandatory every school day at the Co-op placement or Co-op classes as scheduled.  Punctuality is an important employment skill.  On time means being at the work station (or school desk) and ready to go at the start time.

Schedule appointments, drivers education etc. outside of Co-op hours.  Speak to your Co-op teacher if you will be involved in extra-curricular school sports or activities.

In order to add Co-op days (PD days, school holidays) or extra hours other than those specified on the Work Education Agreement a student must submit to the Co-op teacher in advance a fully signed copy of the Extension to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board Coverage form.

Communication among students, parents/guardians, placement supervisors, and the Co-op teachers is vital to ensuring success in the program.
